Our Lady of Lourdes parishioners pray and organize to save their church
"I said I'd leave if I didn't like it, but the minute I walked in, it felt like home," she said. "It's special and diverse - an in-the-city church where people from all over come."
"She said for them the church's embrace of diversity was a major draw, which has included celebrating social justice leaders such as King, the Baptist minister and civil rights leader, and Day, the Catholic anarchist"
Parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Oakland held a prayer walk after Mass to urge the diocese not to close their nearly 103-year Lake Merritt parish. The church features mid-20th-century Catholic revival architecture and colorful stained glass. Congregants offered Biblical readings, hymns, and rosary prayers while some walked along Lakeshore Avenue and others prayed in the courtyard under Japanese maples. Longtime members recounted baptisms, first communions, memorials, daily walks, and conversions tied to the parish. The congregation emphasizes diversity and honors social justice figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Dorothy Day.
