Muslim women say hijab is empowering as half of Britons believe they are pressured'
Briefly

A recent YouGov survey shows that many Britons view the hijab as a choice influenced by pressure, with 49% believing women wear it due to family or community. In contrast, only 26% see it as a personal decision. Dr. Munazzah Chou, a participant in Jalsa Salana, shared her journey of wearing the hijab since 16 years old, emphasizing that it reflects her religious beliefs. This reflects the diverse perspectives on empowerment and choice amid broader societal conversations on Muslim women's rights.
Muslim women have spoken about how wearing the hijab is empowering in the face of a new poll that has revealed almost half of Britons believe that women are pressured into putting it on.
The survey found 49 percent of the British public believe Muslim women wear the hijab due to family or community pressure, while just a quarter see the decision as a personal choice.
Dr Munazzah Chou, 40, one of the over 6,000 female volunteers at Jalsa Salana helping to run a tent city on 210 acres of Hampshire farmland, told The Independent she started wearing the hijab at the age of 16.
I have made the choice to wear the hijab, as an expression of my religious beliefs, said Dr. Munazzah Chou.
