Meet the octogenarian Wicklow couple who have spent 20 years feeding Dublin's homeless
"Rodney and Audrey Evans have been recognised with a World Kindness Day nomination, putting them in with the chance of a national award, to be announced on December 6. Audrey and Rodney Evans live on the border between Greystones and Delgany. Both now in their eighties, they have successfully raised their family together. Rodney passed the business he founded at Farrankelly on to two of his sons a few years ago."
"Though Audrey lets it slip that her legs are not up long walks, the couple are generally in good health. No one would think any the worse of them if they settled for an easy life in retirement, while helping out with the upbringing of grandchildren. But that is emphatically not the attitude of Rodney and Audrey, at least not on Thursdays."
Rodney and Audrey Evans received a World Kindness Day nomination and may win a national award announced December 6. They live on the border between Greystones and Delgany and are in their eighties. They raised their family together, and Rodney transferred the Farrankelly business to two of his sons a few years ago. Audrey notes limited capacity for long walks, yet both remain generally in good health. Rather than retiring comfortably, they travel into central Dublin on Thursdays to volunteer at the Lighthouse Café on Pearse Street, serving meals to homeless people, many with drug addictions.
