The commission, led by Mayor Daniel Lurie, will evaluate the potential elimination of a civilian oversight panel for the Sheriff's Department. Proposition D, passed in 2020, created this board to handle complaints and recommend policy changes, addressing self-policing issues. Historical data shows internal investigations by law enforcement are often ineffective. Recent cases, including deputies accused of misconduct, illustrate the shortcomings of self-investigation. Opponents of the elimination emphasize the need for accountability and transparency in law enforcement.
Data collected over decades has made clear that law enforcement agencies don't do an effective job of preventing abuse and of investigating themselves.
Several deputies, for example, were accused of forcing inmates to fight each other for entertainment-and the DA was forced to drop charges against them when internal investigators destroyed key evidence.
This case illustrates why agencies shouldn't be tasked with investigating themselves, said Alex Bastian, a spokesman for the district attorney.
Voters demanded accountability and transparency because of repeated incidents inside our jail.
