"Everyone's very sad about the situation. Día de los Muertos has been one of the largest celebrations for a very long time, and the city has done a great job putting it on,"
The city of Long Beach canceled its annual Día de los Muertos parade and the Arte y Ofrendas Festival because community members raised concerns about federal immigration operations. City spokesperson Kevin Lee said the decision was made "out of an abundance of caution" because the parade is "a large and very public outdoor event." Councilmember Mary Zendejas requested the cancellation. Officials cited "genuine fears raised by community members, especially those who may face the possibility of sudden and indiscriminate federal enforcement actions that undermine the sense of security necessary to participate fully in public life." Some vendors and attendees expressed sadness and worry about economic fallout and potential effects on Latino Restaurant Week.
