Gurminder Singh explained the goals of the Sikhs for Justice organization during a Khalistan referendum in Los Angeles. Participants voted on the establishment of Khalistan, a sovereign Sikh state. The organization's results will be presented to the United Nations in 2026. Voting eligibility required participants to be ethnically Punjabi, inviting diverse ethnic backgrounds. The event featured a high turnout, with energized attendees chanting slogans in support of Khalistan, as vibrant graphics displayed political messages concerning India's leadership and global perspectives.
"On paper, we are at war with India," Gurminder Singh told me, as thousands gathered on a cloudless March afternoon in Los Angeles.
If they remain on schedule, the results of the votes, gathered from the strongholds of the global Punjabi diaspora, will be presented to the United Nations in 2026.
The only eligibility to vote in this particular exercise, Singh explained, was being ethnically Punjabi: Muslims, Hindus, and Christians were all invited to cast a ballot.
The line to vote snaked around the block, and reporters from Punjabi media outlets queried impassioned voters, who periodically burst into a call and response: "KHALISTAN! ZINDABAD!"
