Israel is no longer shooting and crying'

Israeli settler colonial occupation has produced ongoing brutality against Palestinians, including torture of prisoners. Revelations include rape and sexual violence, alongside psychological and physical harm. Many people worldwide react with horror at accounts of these acts. Sexual violence and torture in Israeli prisons have been documented for decades by scholars and civil society organizations. Conditions inside prisons worsened for Palestinians beginning in the 2010s and deteriorated further over the following two and a half years. A disturbing feature of the violence is the reported glee of guards, including laughter during torture. Testimonies repeatedly describe guards laughing while committing horrors, raising questions about how such behavior becomes normalized and what conditions allow torture to be treated as pleasurable.
