Kelly Ghaisar raised her son, Bijan, in a nurturing environment, believing in the American dream without teaching him to fear the police. She envisioned a life where their Iranian heritage would not define them differently from others in America. Tragically, everything changed when Bijan, after a car accident, was involved in a fatal encounter with the police. In hindsight, Kelly recognizes that her beliefs about law enforcement safety were misplaced, particularly for a young man of color.
Kelly Ghaisar taught her son to view police as protectors, unaware that her son, Bijan, would later need to navigate a frightening encounter with them.
After Bijan’s fatal encounter, Kelly realized the harsh reality that her son, a young man of color, should have been prepared to fear the police.
