Chris Bryant disclosed that he was sexually abused by Michael Croft, the head of the National Youth Theatre, at the age of 16. Croft invited Bryant to dinner daily while he attended rehearsals during the summer of 1978. During one of these evenings, Bryant found Croft inappropriately dressed, and Croft requested sexual acts, leading Bryant to feel coerced. Bryant later mentioned he had been assaulted by five other male MPs in Westminster and expressed concerns over the lack of a reporting system and fear of being perceived negatively.
Bryant recalls being invited to dinner every night by Croft during company rehearsals in the summer of 1978, leading to sexual abuse at Croft's house.
Bryant felt he had no choice but to comply with Croft's requests for sexual acts, resulting in deep emotional consequences, describing the experience as feeling like a '16-year-old whore'.
Despite his abusive past, Bryant maintained a friendship with Croft and even conducted his funeral, juxtaposing the complexity of their relationship.
Bryant revealed he was sexually assaulted by five male MPs during his years in Westminster but did not report them out of fear and concern for his reputation.
