Berkeley sweeps Ohlone Park homeless encampment
Briefly

Ohlone Park was cleared of a homeless encampment on July 9, 2025, as city workers and police initiated the action early in the morning. Many campers had already departed the premises before the intervention. Personal belongings were collected for storage, while other items were removed or disposed of. Advocacy groups attempted to relocate residents, but finding new places remains a challenge. Individuals, such as Jemia Wooten, sought quieter locations to avoid conflicts with authorities, emphasizing their need for safety and community amid ongoing struggles.
Nearly everyone who had been living at the camp, which at times had numbered in the dozens, had left by the time the city moved in around 6 a.m.
City workers wrapped up and carted off personal belongings that had been earmarked for storage. Other items and tents they shoved or bulldozed onto trucks or into garbage bins.
Jemia Wooten, who has been homeless for six years, moved from Ohlone Park to the longstanding encampment at Eighth and Harrison last Thursday along with her cousin.
People just want someplace quiet. It's always this way.
