Democratic institutions are unraveling and collective attention is fractured by misinformation and advancing authoritarianism. Power must be reevaluated and strategies and relationships fundamentally rethought to contend for a just future. How the work is done — the process of learning, growing, and caring for oneself and others while building new structures — is as important as the transformation sought. Widespread burnout, hitting BIPOC leaders in the social justice sector hardest, makes pursuing concrete, freeing outcomes imperative. Consciously leading in liberatory ways aims to fight monsters without becoming monstrous. An iterative Liberatory Leadership Framework presents ten strategies and supporting practices, including grace periods and Third Places, to operationalize the vision.
