Marcelo became club captain in 2021, the first foreign skipper since 1904, and departed after the 2021/22 season. A short spell at Olympiacos preceded a return to Fluminense in February 2023, where he helped win the Copa Libertadores before retiring in February of this year. He earned 58 caps for Brazil and appeared at two World Cups, also winning Olympic silver and bronze medals.
