Wiegman defiant as she responds to Earps criticism
""We had a very good goalkeeper unit and the two were competing for the number one spot. I think I would have done exactly the same thing.""
""We kept communicating every time. As always, we try to support in the best possible way and I can't control how that comes across. There are always learnings but I don't think, in the bigger picture, I would have done things differently.""
""Of course you hope that things are always positive but that's not how things work in football when you're so visible""
Mary Earps criticised the selection of Hannah Hampton and claimed she told the manager she was rewarding "bad behaviour" after Hampton was recalled following an earlier drop for being described as "disruptive and unreliable". Hampton received public support from figures including Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor. Earps announced her shock retirement five weeks before England's Euro defence in Switzerland. Wiegman confirmed she has not spoken to Earps since the book's release and defended her choices as aimed at giving the side the best chance of success. Wiegman said communications continued, she cannot control perceptions, and accepted adversity as part of the role.
