"Video assistant referee technology (VAR) and semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) will not be used until the fifth round of this season's FA Cup. Because of infrastructure and operational costs, VAR had previously only been used at Premier League grounds, and at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals and final. The Football Association says this decision will ensure a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs that take part in the competition."
"The technology requires 30 bespoke cameras to be installed beneath the roof at a stadium to monitor a variety of key elements. The cameras - working at 100 frames per second - track the exact movement of the ball as well as 10,000 data points on the bodies of all 22 players. It means it can be automatically determined whether an attacking player's body was beyond the last defender at the exact time the ball was played."
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) will not be implemented until the fifth round of the FA Cup this season. VAR will be available for every tie from the fifth round, including quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. SAOT will also be available from the fifth round but only at matches hosted at Premier League stadiums due to specific infrastructure requirements. Goalline technology will be available for fixtures hosted by Premier League and Championship clubs. SAOT requires 30 bespoke roof-mounted cameras operating at 100 frames per second and tracking around 10,000 data points per match to determine offside. VAR officials confirm the system's three key measured points before decisions are relayed on-field.
