Why do Premier League teams spend less in January?
"A lot is dependent on injuries, a lot is dependent on suspensions, a lot is dependent on your league position,"
"But the hardest thing about January is nobody wants to lose their best players."
"I don't see how you can sort of be able to save a million pounds or leave a million pounds just for the backup for the January window because you won't want to strengthen as much as possible to abandon the current window that you're in,"
"I think you look around and everyone's looking at loans, everyone's trying to take a loan from this one or cutting short a loan that happened in the summer,"
"We call January the loan window."
Premier League spending in January is substantially lower than in summer, with roughly £1.7bn spent in January windows since 2021 versus £10.5bn in summer windows. Eight top-flight clubs have made no signings so far this January, including relegation-threatened teams. Clubs are reluctant to spend mid-season because injuries, suspensions and league position dictate needs, while most budgets are allocated before the season starts. Many clubs cannot reserve funds for a mid-season purchase, making loan deals the prevalent option. Clubs with greater resources, such as Manchester City, can still make significant January signings.
