Why are La Liga teams playing in retro shirts?
"La Liga director Jaime Blanco stated, 'It allows us to bring the past into the present while continuing to build experiences and strengthen the legacy that emotionally connects with supporters.'"
"Blanco added, 'Presenting this collection during Spain's leading fashion week is the perfect platform to project that identity beyond the field and position soccer at the heart of the cultural and creative conversation.'"
Thirty-eight of the 42 teams in Spain's top two divisions will wear retro shirts to celebrate their cultural identities. The kits pay homage to each club's history and fan traditions. Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, and Real Madrid will not participate fully, with the first three citing logistical reasons. Referees will wear special uniforms, and vintage graphics will be used in broadcasts. La Liga is the first major European league to launch a coordinated retro shirt campaign, unveiled during Madrid Fashion Week.
