"It's regrettable, I have never seen violence like that in any football game. We cannot set that example because it ends up having repercussions all around the world. We have a responsibility to safeguard our image and the image of the institution."
"The melee started in second half injury-time when Cruzeiro midfielder Christian bundled into Everson, prompting the Atletico goalkeeper to jump on top of him with both knees. Team-mates from both teams quickly emerged on the scene and punches were thrown with the officials standing no chance of keeping the warring factions apart."
A violent altercation broke out during injury-time of the Campeonato Mineiro final between Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro. The incident began when Cruzeiro midfielder Christian collided with Atletico goalkeeper Everson, who responded by jumping on him with both knees. This triggered a mass brawl involving players from both teams throwing punches while officials were unable to control the situation. After approximately 10 minutes of chaos, the referee ended the match, confirming Cruzeiro's victory through Kaio Jorge's goal. Subsequently, 23 players were retrospectively sent-off: 12 from Cruzeiro and 11 from Atletico Mineiro. Hulk, Atletico's 39-year-old former Brazil forward, publicly apologized, stating the violence was unprecedented and harmful to Brazilian football's international reputation.
