Wafcon expansion offers 'great exposure' - Chawinga
"It means more opportunities and great exposure to both older and upcoming players,"
"It is a continental platform to bring football dreams alive. I fully intend to captain the Malawi side to claim a spot in the Wafcon competition."
"She says The Gambia previously failed because their chances were "slim" against continental powerhouses such as Nigeria and Cameroon."
The Confederation of African Football decided to expand the Women's Africa Cup of Nations from 12 to 16 teams starting with the next edition in Morocco. The expansion offers greater opportunities and exposure for older and emerging players from nations that have never qualified. Malawi captain Tabitha Chawinga aims to lead Malawi to its first WAFCON appearance after a 0-0 away draw with Angola in the first leg of the second qualifying round. The 11 second-round aggregate winners will advance to the 2026 finals, and CAF has not yet announced how the four additional spots will be allocated. The Gambia has also never qualified and previously faced heavy defeats against continental powerhouses.
