"On the morning of the match, we got the news that four Recreativo fans had died on the road to Madrid. In Huelva, we all knew each other. Mentally, we weren't ready to play. TV rights were too important to move the date; that's the only explanation I can come up with."
"Upon leaving the club in 2006, Sinama Pongolle joined newly-promoted Spanish club Recreativo, who had spent most of their existence in the second and third tiers. Having earned promotion to LaLiga, Recreativo were pitted against giants of European football in Real Madrid and Barcelona, giving supporters the opportunity of a lifetime to attend arenas such as the Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabeu, watching their team as divisional equals."
Florent Sinama Pongolle left Liverpool in 2006 to join newly-promoted Recreativo, a club that had spent most of its existence in Spain's second and third tiers. Recreativo earned promotion to LaLiga and faced giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, offering supporters the rare chance to visit the Santiago Bernabeu and Camp Nou. Five days before Christmas 2006, Recreativo achieved a famous 3-0 victory at the Bernabeu, with Sinama Pongolle opening the scoring. Earlier that matchday, four Recreativo fans died while traveling to Madrid. The team requested a postponement but the fixture proceeded; players and staff later paid tribute to the deceased.
