'Too inconsistent': Liverpool seal striker's $94m sale as move to spark fresh bid for target
Briefly

Darwin Nunez has been sold to Al-Hilal for an initial 53 million euros after struggling to adjust at Liverpool. Signed for 75 million euros from Benfica, he scored 40 goals in 143 matches. The move frees up resources for Liverpool to make a bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Liverpool has recently engaged in a heavy spending spree with new signings, leaving Nunez with limited playing opportunities. The sale raises transfer income for the club this window to nearly 200 million euros.
"Darwin Nunez played a role in Liverpool winning the league last season, but his move is for the best. Too inconsistent. Wish him the best," wrote BBC Sport journalist Charlotte Coates on X.
According to reports in the British media, Al-Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros (AU$94.6 million) for the 26-year-old.
Nunez was likely to play even less this season after Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz as part of a 300 million euro spending spree.
Liverpool reportedly had a first bid of £110 million rejected, with Newcastle demanding a fee of up to £150 million for the Swedish striker.
