"A club statement on Monday said: He is at risk of high-level paraplegia and will miss all remaining games this season. His career may also be seriously affected. On Wednesday the club said that Asamoah was recovering from surgery and was in a stable condition: Guangxi Pingguo FC sincerely thanks all fans and all walks of life for their concern and support for Samuel Asamoah. His recovery progress will be announced in due course after follow-up examinations."
Samuel Asamoah, a 31-year-old Togo international, broke his neck after colliding head-first with a pitch-side LED advertising panel during a League One match in China. Video footage appears to show him being shoved by an opponent as they jostled for the ball. Guangxi Pingguo said Asamoah suffered neck fractures and nerve damage, underwent surgery, and faces risk of high-level paraplegia, missing the rest of the season and with his career possibly seriously affected. The club later said he was recovering from surgery and in stable condition, thanking supporters. Chinese authorities said the display was three metres from the field; Zhang Zhixiong received a yellow card. Asamoah previously played mostly in Belgium and has six caps for Togo.
