The Ireland v Israel match at Aviva Stadium will be played as Nations League fixtures scheduled for September and October. Minister Patrick O'Donovan and junior minister for sport Charlie McConalogue will not attend the match. McConalogue said the Government has consistently stated that the decision to play is for the FAI, while also saying the Government has led politically internationally regarding unacceptable force and loss of life in Palestine. Social Democrats TD Sinéad Gibney criticized the Government’s stance, arguing Ireland cannot engage as a State in sportswashing a genocide and asking whether sanctions costs would be covered if the FAI refuses to play. McConalogue denied sportswashing and said significant UEFA repercussions would follow if the FAI declined, with the Government supporting the FAI’s decision.
