Swiss prosecutors have appealed a ruling that acquitted former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA chief Michel Platini of corruption charges linked to a 2 million Swiss franc payment authorized by Blatter in 2011. Both officials faced allegations of fraud and misappropriation but have maintained their innocence. This appeal follows previous acquittals in 2022, with Platini's lawyer calling for closure in the matter. The case, revealed publicly in 2015, significantly impacted both men's careers, forcing Blatter's resignation and derailing Platini's aspirations within FIFA.
"After two acquittals, even the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland must realize that these criminal proceedings have definitively failed," Platini's lawyer Dominic Nellen said in a statement.
"The corruption case related to payment of 2 million Swiss francs that Blatter authorized to Platini in 2011. They said the payment was a consultancy fee."
