Football fans are urged to be cautious of online ticket fraud after a study found approximately 2.5 million lost to scammers in the past two years. Lloyds Bank estimates indicate around 12,000 supporters were victims in recent seasons, with customers losing about 500,000. The 'Stop! Think Fraud' campaign aims to increase awareness of scams, particularly on social media, where most scams originate. Supporters are advised to purchase tickets only from official sources. Liverpool fans are most commonly targeted, with those aged 25-34 being the most frequent victims.
Fraud is a ruthless crime that preys on our passions, our trust, and our excitement. More than three quarters of football ticket scams last season started on social media, with what seem like genuine 'first come, first served' offers all too often designed to rip off desperate fans.
Supporters should only buy directly from clubs, their official partners, and legitimate resale outlets. The 'Stop! Think Fraud' campaign has been established to raise awareness of online purchase scams.
