Arsenal had been enduring their worst start to a season since 2014 and were at risk of missing Champions League playoff contention. Russo had started the prior three matches as a No. 10 while Stina Blackstenius led the line, and Arsenal created chances but failed to convert as Russo dropped deep and could not finish crosses or long balls. Moving Russo into the central striker role around the 60th minute produced the team's best attacking opportunities.
