Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former Spanish Football Federation chief, is appealing a Supreme Court ruling that upheld a $12,600 fine for forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso. The kiss, which took place during the 2023 Women's World Cup, sparked widespread outrage and was deemed non-consensual by Spain's top criminal court. Despite Rubiales' claims of it being a consensual celebration, the court ruled against him, also dismissing coercion charges against him and others. Feminist groups criticized the sentence as too lenient and demanded stricter penalties.
"The kiss was not consensual, and Hermoso expressed her displeasure with what happened, as she herself confirmed in the trial."
"Rubiales maintained that the kiss was a consensual peck between friends celebrating during a medal ceremony after star forward Hermoso had just helped Spain beat England in the final in Sydney."
