PSG join Europe's elite with back-to-back titles
PSG retained the Champions League by beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final in Budapest, following a 5-0 win over Inter Milan in Munich 12 months earlier. They were the first team to defend the title since Real Madrid’s three consecutive wins from 2016 to 2018, and only the second to do so in the Champions League era since 1993. All 10 outfield starters against Arsenal also started against Inter, with Matvey Safonov replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who moved to Manchester City. Over the past two years, Luis Enrique’s team won eight of 10 trophies since the start of last season, missing only the Club World Cup and the French Cup this campaign. PSG scored 45 goals and averaged 60.5% possession in the competition, and could become the fifth side to win three successive European Cup/Champions League titles, though they still trail Real Madrid’s record five in a row from 1956 to 1960.
