"There's certainly been moments -- and I won't be alone in this -- there's certainly been moments where you are thinking, 'Is it worth it?',"
"And certainly, moments where you're thinking, 'What's being said is completely unfair'."
"We have this archaic psychological tactic of 'let's bombard the ref or bombard the fourth official with the hope of getting a decision out of it'."
Anthony Taylor has considered quitting refereeing because of persistent abuse and harassment. Fan harassment at Budapest Airport after the 2023 Europa League final led his family to stop attending high-profile matches. Taylor has officiated two FA Cup finals and served on the FIFA referees' list for over a decade. He issued 13 yellow cards in the Sevilla v Roma final and faced aggressive fan behaviour while travelling home. Taylor identifies a culture of bombardment aimed at referees and fourth officials designed to influence decisions, and he views that approach as archaic and unfair.
