Parents met with surprise after weeks of illuminating Richmond field left in dark by copper thieves
"People are breaking into our streetlights, taking out the copper, and we're left to deal with the consequences,"
"It's very frustrating."
"The city has been on it. They have folks working to repair the lights. They have part of it repaired already,"
"Basically, their answer is this is all a bureaucratic red tape issue,"
On November 12, copper thieves vandalized the stadium lights at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Richmond, disabling the city's only illuminated soccer field. The outage left the field pitch dark and disrupted evening practices attended by more than 200 people. Richmond United Soccer Club volunteers and parents hauled generators and extension cords and set up portable lighting to keep practices running. Councilwoman Doria Robinson said city crews were working on repairs and had partly restored the system, but no firm repair timeline was provided. Club co-director Samantha Torres described the thefts as causing frustration and blamed bureaucratic delays. The lights unexpectedly came back on during ongoing repair efforts.
