Jackie McCarthy O'Brien became the first woman of colour to represent Ireland at senior level in both women's football and rugby, earning 13 international caps in each sport. She formed one half of the first mother-and-daughter duo to play soccer for Ireland alongside her daughter Sam. She was taken from her mother as a baby and spent five years in an industrial school. She faced racist abuse in public and experienced sexual harassment that tainted her football career. She also came to terms with her sexual identity while navigating those personal and professional challenges.
