"Alonso scored a lot of goals, and we've got to make sure we find that within the team. Alonso is going to be out for a good chunk of the year. We have to make sure that we are finding goals somewhere, and that means we need to look into the market and be able to add attacking help. I mean, there's no doubt about that. So I think that's priority number one."
"There's certainly a need for goals and attacking help, and I think that's something we're keeping a close eye on in the market, Dunivant added. Whether that's now, whether it's in summer, we need to be ready when an opportunity presents itself."
Alonso Martinez ruptured his ACL on international duty in November and is expected to be sidelined until after the 2026 World Cup. Martinez led NYCFC with 19 goals across the regular season and playoffs. NYCFC advanced past Philadelphia but lacked a recognized striker and then suffered a 5-1 loss to Inter Miami. Todd Dunivant was appointed sporting director in December and identifies replacing Martinez's goals as the top priority. Dunivant said the club will pursue attacking help in the winter or midseason transfer windows and monitor the market for opportunities, seeking players with profiles similar to Justin Haak, who departed for LA Galaxy.
