NWSL to introduce combines in lieu of draft
"As the women's soccer landscape continues to rapidly evolve, a combine is a strategic platform that will allow us to support NWSL clubs in early talent evaluation and provide players with exposure to a professional environment,"
"This initiative is about widening the lens of who gets seen and ensuring that talent, wherever it resides, has a continued pathway to our league."
The NWSL will run two December combines: an adult showcase for 18–23-year-olds and a youth combine for 13–17-year-olds. Events will be invite-only and will allow players to keep college eligibility if they do not sign with an agent or a professional contract. The combines replace the league's traditional January draft after the 2024 collective bargaining agreement introduced full free agency and removed drafts. The combines aim to expand scouting windows, give clubs early evaluation in a professional environment, widen exposure for overlooked talent, and create clearer pathways from youth and college ranks into the league.
