Mourinho's 'big mistake' after 'disgusting' Vinicius incident
""I think he is still emotional. I think he made a big mistake today to justify racial abuse. "He's saying it's OK, when Vinicius provokes you, to be racist - and I think that is very wrong. "We should never, ever justify racial abuse. Vinicius has had enough of that unjustified behaviour from people. I know Mourinho by heart would agree with me but he expressed himself a bit unfortunately, I believe.""
""Vini has been subject to this a few times throughout his career. To ruin a night like this for our team is a disgrace.""
""There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium. A stadium where Vinicius plays something happens, always.""
The Champions League match at Benfica was halted for ten minutes after Vinicius Junior reported alleged racist abuse and he and teammates temporarily left the field. Vinicius called racists "cowards" on Instagram. Benfica manager Jose Mourinho suggested Vinicius did not celebrate respectfully and implied incidents occur frequently where Vinicius plays, prompting criticism. Former midfielder Clarence Seedorf condemned Mourinho for appearing to justify racial abuse and said such behaviour must never be justified. England international Trent Alexander-Arnold described the incident as a disgrace to football that ruined the night and said there is no place for it in society.
