""He suggested, 'can you not ask [Danish coach Sepp] Piontek to play for 45 minutes or maybe less? Then I'll pick you up and we come with a private jet and you can play in the evening in Bochum'. "I was not thinking it was too crazy because I was in the best shape of my life.""
""Uli Hoeness was on the sideline when I came out for the second half. He said, 'what's going on? The plane is waiting!' ""
""That was my biggest concern because he was starting to get a little bit angry because he had an expensive plane waiting for us. I didn't want to watch him because I knew exactly what his face looked like.""
On 13 November 1984 Soren Lerby played for Denmark in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin and for Bayern Munich in a German Cup match in Bochum later that evening. Denmark needed only a point and led 1-1 at half-time before going on to win 4-1. Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness arranged a private jet and planned to collect Lerby after a brief appearance, but substitutions rules and in-game events delayed departure until the 57th minute. Lerby showered quickly, left with a police escort, flew to Dusseldorf and faced heavy traffic en route to Bochum.
