A 45-year-old man from Gateshead was arrested for alleged racist abuse during the Tyne-Wear derby on March 22. Northumbria Police detained him on suspicion of a racially-aggravated public order offence. He has been released on bail while investigations continue. Detective Inspector Phil Guard emphasized the unacceptability of racial abuse in football and communities.
