"In September, FIFA suspended seven overseas-born players who had featured for Malaysia in June's 4-0 win over Vietnam in a 2027 Asian Cup qualifier for 12 months and fined FAM $438,000, citing falsified or doctored documentation. Presenting fraudulent documentation with the purpose of gaining eligibility to play for a national team constitutes, pure and simple, a form of cheating, which cannot in any way be condoned, FIFA said in the report."
"Claims that players acquired or were aware of fake documents' are baseless as no solid evidence has been presented so far, FAM said in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday, disputing FIFA's findings. FAM would like to assert that the heritage players involved are legitimate Malaysian citizens. In its defence, FAM said there had been an administrative error when submitting documents and that it is preparing to appeal the ruling using original documents that have been certified by the Malaysian government."
FIFA suspended seven overseas-born Malaysian players for 12 months and fined the Football Association of Malaysia $438,000 after finding falsified or doctored documentation used to establish eligibility. The FIFA disciplinary committee reported original birth certificates showed supposed Malaysian-born grandparents were actually born in the same countries as the players, including Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain. FIFA characterized presenting fraudulent documentation to gain national-team eligibility as cheating that undermines competition fairness and football’s integrity. FAM denied that players acquired or knew of fake documents, called the claims baseless, cited an administrative error, and said it will appeal using original government-certified documents.
