"The players' union said in a statement that the "players will protest in a symbolic fashion to denounce the lack of transparency, dialogue and coherence of LaLiga regarding the possibility of playing a game in the United States. LaLiga made official last week its plans to hold a the Barcelona- Villarreal game in Miami on Dec. 20. The union said the captains of the 20 top-flight sides were in agreement with the protest."

The Spanish players' union announced protests would occur immediately after kickoffs across the ninth round from Friday through Monday. LaLiga confirmed Barcelona vs. Villarreal in Miami on Dec. 20. The union said captains of the 20 top-flight sides agreed with the protest but did not request Barcelona or Villarreal to participate. Barcelona personnel expressed displeasure at the travel requirements, while club president Joan Laporta defended the Miami game as an opportunity to expand into the American market.
