"I want to inform all Benfica fans that we have just reached an agreement with Bruno Lage, who is no longer Benfica's coach as of today,"
"I would like to thank Bruno for everything he tried to do, everything he did for Benfica, and all the commitment he showed throughout this year representing our club. But, unfortunately, the time has come, and we believe it was time for a change."

Benfica dismissed head coach Bruno Lage following a 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag in their Champions League opener. Benfica had led 2-0 through Enzo Barrenechea and Vangelis Pavlidis before Qarabag mounted a comeback to secure their first-ever win in the competition. The result extended Benfica's home Champions League winless streak to six matches (two draws, four losses), a first in the club's history. Lage returned in September 2024, won the Taca da Liga, and recorded 26 wins, five draws and three losses in 34 matches, a 76.5% win rate with 86 goals scored. Reports indicate Jose Mourinho is close to being appointed as his replacement.
