Josh Gallagher helps Loyola turn back Cathedral in boys' soccer rivalry game
"Just like last year ... the keeper didn't come off his line and I just went back post with it."
"We're not as experienced, but we have a lot of depth. It's a long and a short season. I don't want to miss a game."
"I took a touch around the defender and toe-poked it past the goalie."
"It feels surreal ... a right moment, right time kind of thing. I knew I had to step up to the occasion when they put me in. It was a really big game and we persevered."
Loyola defeated Cathedral 2-1 in the Downtown World Cup rivalry match. Senior captain Josh Gallagher opened the scoring with a header seven minutes into the game, and junior Kian Benitez added a goal late in the first half for his first varsity score. Goalkeeper Joseph Piscatella made several point-blank saves to maintain the lead. Cathedral cut the deficit in the 44th minute when Hector Gutierrez scored on a 30-yard direct free kick. Loyola improved to 2-0-1 and has won back-to-back games after a difficult stretch in prior meetings. Loyola graduated 14 players from last season's veteran squad.
