"Now, reserve football will mean very little to some people, but back then it was the pathway into the first team Cloughie [Forest manager Brian Clough] loved the old Central League and took it very seriously. Brian Laws had been in that reserve team, Mark Crossley was in goal, Garry Parker, Gary Charles and Steve Chettle had played, so to get into the side was difficult."
"The injury was of course a big blow. My big mate at Forest was Steve Stone and he broke his leg four days after me, so he and I spent a lot of time recuperating together. Would I have made it in the top flight without the injury? You never know. Steve broke his leg twice more and he played for England, so I can't sit here and blame it all on the injury."
Sean Dyche progressed through Nottingham Forest's reserve side before establishing his playing career at Chesterfield in the 1990s and later at Bristol City, Luton Town (loan), Millwall, Watford and Northampton Town. A serious leg break during his reserve breakthrough curtailed top-flight prospects and followed a growth spurt that prompted a switch from central midfield to centre-back. Reserve football acted as the pathway into Forest's first team under Brian Clough. Dyche recuperated alongside teammate Steve Stone, who also suffered leg breaks. Dyche later entered management, beginning at Watford and eventually managing Nottingham Forest with characteristic stoicism.
