Matt Beard, the former Liverpool manager who led the Reds to Women's Super League titles in 2013 and 2014, died on 20 September aged 47. Hundreds of mourners attended a mass at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, joined by prominent figures from women's football including Emma Hayes, Marc Skinner and Casey Stoney. Beard's family, Liverpool's first-team squad, coaching staff and former players were present. Players formed a guard of honour as his coffin, draped in red and white scarves, arrived. Ian Rush and Chris Kirkland were among the attendees. Beard's brother appealed for his passing to be a lesson and recalled his humour and warm personality.
"Please, please, please let Matt's passing be a lesson to us all,"
"We are only human."
"Mark had a beautiful soul and a one-in-a-million personality. He always found a way to make you laugh and smile."
