Rangers lost 6-0 at Club Brugge, resulting in a 9-1 aggregate elimination from the Champions League play-offs. Russell Martin apologised to fans, called the evening humiliating and painful, and described it as the toughest night of his head-coaching career while remaining determined the team can progress and grow. Martin's selection left captain James Tavernier and Nicolas Raskin on the bench in an attempt to field the freshest, most attacking side, but an early goal and a red card derailed that plan within eight minutes. Martin criticised self-inflicted errors and a poor response to disappointment and faces intensified scrutiny as he seeks recovery.
To the fans, I have nothing but an apology. I'm very sorry they had to witness that. It's humiliating and it's painful. There's disappointment and hurt that they've had to go through that. I don't think I've learnt anything new tonight, I'm just embarrassed by the defeat. It's probably the toughest night I've had as a head coach. It doesn't change the fact I think we will progress, move forward and grow.
Madness. There's so much self-inflicted pain. Our response to disappointment is so poor.
