"I was thinking about quitting because I like basketball as well,"
"I wasn't sure in football any more because when you get to the training ground you don't feel happy any more, you know?"
"I was just trying to find other solutions and to feel happier than I felt before because all of my friends were playing basketball."
"Obviously we have new goals this season and we want to aim high. But I like to say that it's quite early to talk about our goals, the season is long so let's go game by game."
Josko Gvardiol nearly left football at age 16 to pursue basketball because he felt unhappy and was influenced by friends. He later secured a place in Dinamo Zagreb's first team and won consecutive Croatian championships. A £16 million transfer to RB Leipzig made him the most expensive Croatian teenager, and Manchester City signed him two years later for £77m, making him the second-most expensive defender ever. Gvardiol has scored more Premier League goals than any defender since joining City, played extensively at centre-back and left-back, and currently features as a left-sided centre-back while urging a game-by-game approach to the season.
