"Given the Panthers' disgraceful performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, the government has decided to dissolve the coaching staff, suspend the national team until further notice, and exclude players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang."
"I think the team's problems are much deeper than the individual I am."
Gabonese authorities suspended the national team, dismissed coach Thierry Mouyouma and excluded players including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga after poor results at the Africa Cup of Nations. Gabon lost to Cameroon and Mozambique, finished bottom of their group in Morocco and then lost 3-2 to Ivory Coast on 31 December, having surrendered a two-goal lead in Marrakech. Aubameyang missed the final group game after returning to Marseille for treatment on a thigh injury and said team problems run deeper than any individual. Mouyouma had been in charge for just over two years. Government disbanding of teams has become less common since FIFA tightened rules on interference.
