The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with 78 of 104 matches in the US. US President Donald Trump sparked tension by suggesting acquisition of Greenland and threatening tariffs on eight European countries, including Germany, before rowback. DFB vice-president Oke Gottlich urged concrete consideration of a boycott, comparing the situation to the 1980 Olympic boycott and warning the current threat could be greater. The French government is not currently in favour of a boycott. The Danish Football Association described the situation as aware of the current sensitive situation while Denmark pursues qualification via play-offs. Germany previously clashed with FIFA in 2022 over the OneLove armband controversy.
