German FA boss says World Cup boycott would be 'misguided'
"I don't think this is a big debate at all, because I believe we at the DFB are very unanimous in our view that this debate is completely misguided at this point in time."
"When the time is right, we will discuss it, but from my point of view, it is completely out of place right now,"
"Personally, I would advise against traveling given the current situation in the country (USA),"
"I may disagree with many of my colleagues. But I am also a democrat who can understand if, in the end, the majority decides that a boycott is perhaps not the right signal for German footba"
DFB leadership has rejected calls for a boycott of the US-hosted World Cup, calling the debate misguided and untimely. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf stated the DFB is unified in that view. DFL President Hans-Joachim Watzke said discussion should wait until an appropriate time and is out of place now. Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen cited the 2018 Russia World Cup precedent and urged that geopolitics be handled elsewhere. Calls for a boycott increased in Germany and Europe after US political actions and incidents in Minneapolis, but a boycott remains unlikely. DFB Vice President Oke Gottlich advised against travel while acknowledging majority decisions.
