Football league with 134-year history in hunt for new teams
"At the end of the current season, two of our Scottish FA licensed clubs will be promoted to the new Scottish Lowland Football League West," he said. "The Lowland League is being expanded from its current 18 teams to 32, split into two divisions, East and West."
"That will obviously reduce our numbers within the league and that's why we're looking to recruit some new member clubs," added Osborne."
"There's not many places in Dumfries and Galloway that are not covered by existing teams," he explained. "So we've got to look further afield if we want to try and develop the league."
The South of Scotland Football League dates to 1892 and risks dropping to single-figure membership next season. A restructure below Scotland's top four tiers will create a Scottish Lowland Football League West, expanding the Lowland League from 18 to 32 teams split East and West. Two Scottish FA licensed SOSFL clubs—likely Dalbeattie Star and Newton Stewart—are set to be promoted, which will reduce SOSFL numbers. The SOSFL has previously operated with seven teams and is now seeking to recruit new clubs beyond its traditional Dumfries and Galloway boundaries. League secretary Richard Osborne is leading efforts to widen the league's reach after Upper Annandale departed last year.
