The club had occupied the fifth tier since relegation from the Football League in 2008 and had narrowly avoided going out of business. Under the new ownership the club achieved an unprecedented run of three successive promotions, reaching the Championship. The owners contributed investment, increased global media exposure including a fly-on-the-wall documentary series, and drew celebrity attendance to matches. Initial contact and confidentiality agreements occurred in early 2020.
