Fifa to fund research into women's ACL injuries
Briefly

FIFA is funding a year-long study at Kingston University to explore how hormonal fluctuations during menstrual cycles may affect the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in women’s football. Research indicates that female players sustain ACL injuries two to six times more than males. The study will track hormone levels, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, among players from various clubs. By analyzing injury scenarios and hormonal impacts, researchers hope to identify possible preventative measures and improve training techniques to reduce injuries linked to hormonal influences.
"We want to examine whether athletes may be more predisposed to injuries because of the functional changes in terms of their anatomy and physiology during the menstrual cycle."
"We know hormones fluctuate during different phases of the cycle but we don't yet know how much of an influence that may have on the risk of injury."
