""Those were good minutes, I'm taking it one step at a time and now I'll continue to grow," Gutierrez said."
""Those three guys that were born in the United States and decided to play for Mexico, and for that reason alone they deserve my respect," said Mexico's coach Javier Aguirre."
""The three started off well, they're kids with a future, I'm happy.""
Mexico defeated Panama 1-0 in a World Cup warmup match thanks to a 92nd-minute own goal by defender Richard Peralta. The victory ended a six-match winless run and was Mexico's first win since beating the United States in the Gold Cup final last July. American-born players Richard Ledezma and Brian Gutierrez made their debuts; Ledezma completed a FIFA one-time switch and played all 90 minutes while Gutierrez, who only played U.S. friendlies, started and exited in the 57th minute. Obed Vargas also started and had previously earned his first Mexico cap in October 2024. Coach Javier Aguirre praised the U.S.-born players.
